Within the last two years, EU/German-Turkish relations have become yet more conflictual and complex. Turkey was deeply unsettled by the failed coup attempt of July 2016, the EU has been challenged by the refugee crisis and is facing the unprecedented case of one Member State aspiring to exit the Union. Moreover, Turkey’s referendum on a Constitutional change has severely affected both EU-Turkey as well as German-Turkish relations. At the same time, mutual dependencies persist, manifested most apparently in the refugee deal, concluded in November 2015.
